All the images are compiled from the same source package. Only the
configuration is different.

No, you need to use the kernel-source-2.4.27 package. If you want to
compile external drivers, you need the matching headers (e.g.
kernel-headers-2.4.27-1-686) or the source code, which needs to be
configured according to your current kernel. This includes setting
EXTRAVERSION=-1-686 in the MAKEFILE, copying the config from /boot
to /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.27/.config, and running
make clean oldconfig dep
