I know xfce is entirely compatible with all GNOME apps; I don't use
any KDE apps, but it has an option to include the KDE menus as well,
so I presume it's compatible with those too. It simply (and I mean
simply) provides an alternative (very lean) desktop to GNOME and KDE.
