'Sounds like gdm to me.  Is it feasible to replace gdm with [xkw]dm
and test that hypothesis?  Then replace [xkw]dm with gdm and verify
it's still insane.  Worst case (as bug reports go), that replacing and
restoring might even fix it.

Personally, I don't see much point to any of them for a personal
(single user) workstation.  ymmv.
