  How did you start uml?
What exactly did you run to update woody?

  I've downloaded Debian-3.0r0.ext2.bz2 from user-mode-linux.sourceforge.net
and started it normally, but it have very little free space and could
be not enough memory in uml. Try to resize rootfs to get extra space and make
swap device in uml too.
