vncserver has been nothing but trouble for me.
Try:
#! /bin/sh
exec xinit /usr/bin/X11/twm -- /usr/bin/X11/Xvnc :1 -rfbport 5900
Save it as 'vncstart', chmod +x it, and ./vncstart; xvncviewer
