No need to worry about the conversion, have your grandson save as '.doc' rather
than '.sxw' OOo does that.

The other suggestion to save as a PDF is a good suggestion to. Everybody can use
the free reader from Adobe, or use any of the available PDF viewers. The
strenght in the PDF format, is that no formatting will be lost, as no conversion
is necessary.
