If you remove them they will be recreated when you upgrade the package.
Sysvconfig allows you to disable stuff.  Just select "Enable/Disable" in
the main menu and follow directions.

Had me going for a moment.

I use file-rc.

Echidna:~# apt-get install sysvconfig
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package sysvconfig
Echidna:~#

Okay, I do have a Sarge box without file-rc. Looks promising. Now it needs to get part of the base install _and_ mentioned in the relevant manuals:-)

For other RH (and SuSE) refuges it the package basically duplicates the functionality of the chkconfig and service commands.
