Took up the advice, and tried it (with the chmod change suggested by Thomas Adam) but to no avail :(
Even tried a slight variant

/dev/hdb1 /home/nil/redmond vfat users,uid=nil,umask=0002,iocharset=utf8 0 0

The man pages of fstab and mount tell me this should do the trick, but still am puzzled about the outcome
