Problems when upgrading from kernel 2.4 to 2.6

Hi.
I've just installed latest sarge without any problems. By default, the kernel-image used is
2.4.26-1-386. I would like to have a newer
kernel in my machine, so I tried to install
2.6.7-1-386 (provided with sarge). When I
try to run apt-get install on this package,
however, I get

  Setting up kernel-image-2.6.7-1-386 (2.6.7-2) ...
  /usr/sbin/mkinitrd: add_modules_dep_2_5: modprobe failed
  FATAL: Module initio not found.
  Failed to create initrd image.
  dpkg: error processing kernel-image-2.6.7-1-386 (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 9
  Errors were encountered while processing:
   kernel-image-2.6.7-1-386
  E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Indeed, if I try to run

mkinitrd -o /dev/null /lib/modules/2.6.7-1-386/

I get the same error:

  /usr/sbin/mkinitrd: add_modules_dep_2_5: modprobe failed
  FATAL: Module initio not found.

I noticed many other users had almost the same problem, so I upgraded initrd-tools and and module-init-tools to the latest version, but nothing changed. The file /etc/mkinitrd/modules
just contains comments and, in particular, does not include any reference to "initio" module.

Is this a bug? Am I doing any mistake?

Thank you.
Ugo.
