[several posts about switching console fonts on bootup]

I had the same problem. And i figured it out! Was a hard one, but
finally i succeeded!

It also happened on a dist-upgrade...

Debian executes
S48console-screen.sh in /etc/rcS.d
upon bootup.

The console fonts are in the directory:
/usr/share/consolefonts

You can change your default console font at bootup with editing:
vi /etc/console-tools/config

#SCREEN_FONT=lat0-08
# ^^^^this was the bad one!
SCREEN_FONT=lat0-16
