Indirectly, my last exchange with Mark pointed out the problem.
Because the VFAT partition doesn't support symlinks or chown / chmod
changes, critical things
failed in the /var file system.
FOR THE TO-DO LIST: Both those problems are fixable -- the Cygwin
project (www.cygwin.com) does a decent job of faking both on Windoze
file systems. The symlinks are faked with windows shortcuts, I'll need
to look at the rest.
Now, of course, I get to wrestle with the other problems :-)
