This (or something similar) was (is?) happening on several of my sid boxes. I never learned what caused it, or the fix, as it was something I could live with. The console font changed from normal white on black to light white (gray?) on black, and became difficult to read.

I partially tracked it down, but don't remember what I found. What I did was start in single-user mode; no problem. Then I deactivated any ?dm and rebooted normally. Problem. Then I rebooted again in single-user mode, and then started running the rc scripts manually one at a time as if the machine were running in normal mode, until I hit a script that caused the font to change. IIRC, at that point, it was getting tedious to figure out what in the script was causing the problem, or I got distracted and had to leave the investigation, or something; at any rate, I never actually solved the problem, and as said above, I just learned to live with it. But you could follow this procedure and maybe narrow down your search for the culprit.
