When I start gmplayer, I also get "could not connect to
socket". This doesn't seem to matter as mplayer will still play avi's,
mpeg's, etc. without a problem.

The default skin is part of the mplayer package and should have
installed automatically. It is found in /usr/share/mplayer/Skin. Other
skins can be downloaded from
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/dload.html

The comments in /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf give instructions on how to
set the default skin and where to unpack any extra skins you download.
