nvidia-source - problems

I've just dist-upgraded and installed 2.6.7-1 kernel image and the
latest nvidia packages. I've then done make install in
/usr/src/modules/nvidia*/nv.
However now my screen now goes black when gdm starts, never suspends,
and won't even allow me to ctrl+alt+[1-6]  to use the console.
I've read /usr/share/doc and played with the ignore_pci setting in
/etc/default/hotplug, and also play with blacklisting vesafb, and
rivafb. While this changes the symptoms it doesn't fix the problem.
Can anyone help me with this?
