HPT372 wasn't supported until 2.4.20, or 2.4.21...
there was alpha support before that but it did
nothing. I assume the 374 is similar enough that it's
supported by the same kernels as support the 372.
I don't know where to get a module, but if you have
bandwidth to waste, you could get something like
knoppix, which almost certainly has a newer kernel.
(Knoppix is based on Debian-unstable)
Is there a different ide chipset onboard? I suggest
installing with the disk connected to the 'standard'
controller (i.e. the southbridge), then upgrade to
testing (Sarge) and download a newer kernel. Once you
have it working, change /etc/fstab as follows:
-duplicate the root line - i.e. the one that says
"/dev/hdaX / blah blah 0 1" - modify the copied line
to begin with /dev/hdeX (X is the partition number, if
you didnt know)
-move the disk, make sure it boots OK, then comment
out (#) or delete the original line.
NOTE: This will work much better if hpt support is
compiled in. If it isn't, hpt *must* be in an initrd
so the kernel can load it, before the kernel
understands the hpt chip enough to read the disk.

hi
have been trying to install Woody on a pc with an
Abit AT7-Max2
motherboard which has an onboard Highpoint HPT374
Hard disk controller.
Unfortunately, none of the kernel flavours available
as boot options on
the install CD seem to suppport the HPT374 -
therefore it cannot detect
any hard drives!
I've been looking for a suitable driver or kernel
module that can be
loaded, but with no success so far. If there is
anyone out there who has
successfully installed Woody on a similar
configuration, any tips and
pointers would be very gratefully received.
