Install the SMART tools?  Assuming the drive is smart capable.

  apt-cache show smartsuite

Or on sid:

  apt-cache show smartmontools

Then see if that shows anything useful.

My experiences too.

For critical servers such as that I would always use disk mirroring or
other raid capability.
