Well, that's silly. Under debian [gxwk]dm (pick one, dependinh on what you
have installed) one of those is automatically started up throughout _ALL_
run-levels except 4,6,0. Putting it in /etc/inittab is a nasty ugly
hangover from RedHat which thankfully, debian has dropped. The
starting/stopping of a graphical display manager now rightfully resides as
an initscript.

What a surprise, you're trying to load two at the same time. That won't
work. What you need to do, is edit the value contained in this file:

/etc/X11/default-display-manager
