Different/no DRI drivers (propriatary vs. dri.sf.net vs. no dri)? Maybe
one driver is enabling DMA by default and the other is not? (don't
remember how to force or check it, sorry).

Don't think it should cause 100% difference, but maybe ...

does glxinfo say for both (near the top):
