You might also want to consider using gogo, which is based on lame. From the freshmeat page: "GOGO is a patch against LAME which makes it encode about twice as quickly while maintaining the same quality. It makes use of MMX, 3D Now!, and SSE if your system supports these instructions." I don't think it has been debianized, though.
