I like FTE which is available in X, console, and virtual terminal
version.  To use the console version as a regular user the binary must
be setuid 0, but it is very easy to use and rather lightweight.

After several years I gave up on Vim and friends as well as whatever
versions of Emacs exists.  FTE is now my default editor and works very
well.
