Hi - I use a fuji finepix 310 with no problems.

... good, so the card is available as drive sda

There's your problem. You need to mount the partition, not the block
device:

mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/fuji

I usually use the following:

mount -tvfat -oumask=0000 /dev/sda1 /mnt/fuji

which will allow normal users to access the filesystem.
