I have an Averatic 3120V. They don't make this model any more, but just as
a data point, I can boot it using a Knoppix CD and it works perfectly, which
indicates Linux support for all the hardware. Perhaps a cheaper alternative
if you can't afford a ThinkPad (which I also have used and like).
(Why Knoppix? Because I don't want to install Debian permanently on it:
it's my official Windows box that I keep around for the occasional times I
need one.)
With Knoppix, you have to disable checking for a SCSI bus to boot
successfully.
As someone posted here in another thread, you might try taking a Knoppix or
other liveCD with you to a computer shop and booting your desired laptop, to
see whether it can autodetect all the major hardware.
