He's suggesting that you reconfigure your kernel to build whatever you need in
order to boot directly into the kernel, rather than building those things as
modules. If you do that, you don't need an initrd, and you don't need initrd
tools. At least in theory.
In practice, probably try it and see I guess. If make-kpkg is clever, it will
build you a .deb that won't depend on initrd tools if you don't need an
initrd. I'm not sure whether it's that clever or not.
If not, I suppose you have a mess indeed. I can definitely understand why you
want to build the kernel on your fast box, but I'm not sure how you can coax
Sid into building you a kernel package that will install on Woody.
If all else fails, maybe you could compile the kernel manually, then use
checkinstall to build a fake .deb that won't install using the usual helper
tools. It should just copy the files where they need to go without trying to
invoke any particular Debian tools. Should in theory, though I haven't tried
it.
