In case it isn't obvious:  Most likely, if you use ctl-alt-F1, you 
will get the console from which the gui was started.  If so, you will 
not have a command prompt there unless you kill X-windows with ctl-c. 
That console will show the current messages from the disfunctional 
gui -- probably a heap of complaints!  Of course, you can hop to one 
of the other consoles with any of alt-F2 to alt-F6.
