The same for me today, after playing with partitions. I get "ERROR 2" 
when booting grub. I have reinstalled it, and when I do:
 
root (hd0,5)
setup (hd0)         

everything goes fine without errors, but when I boot grub stops with 
error 2.

I have tried Lilo and works ok. I have installed grub in several 
machines and never had this problem.
Any help will be welcome.
