Huh? This is from the KDE manual chapter headed "System Notifications."

"Maybe you want to use a special media player to play sound files, e.g.
because you use sound files in a special format or you don't use the aRts
sound daemon. In that case, check the Use external player option and enter
the full path and name of the program you want to use into the text field."

I can't find out anything about "knotify" right off without more digging than
I want to do. Looks like some strictly internal thing that can't be run
conventionally. Nothing in /usr/share/doc mentions it by name. Even so, I
expect they are almost certainly one in the same.

This whatever flummy at the business end of kcontrol -> Sound & Multimedia ->
System Notifications can most assuredly use a command line player to squawk
out its irritating noises. I just set mine to use "aplay" and turned on the
sounds. Now my world is filled with completely useless sounds every time I
turn around.

Having thus confirmed that I didn't imagine doing this two years ago, I will
now gratefully silence all this idiocy once more.
