I believe it's /etc/init.d/alsa not alsasound. (At least it is on my
system.)

If you look at the news for alsa-base
(/usr/share/doc/alsa-base/NEWS.Debian.gz) you'll find the problem. The
ALSA startup scripts no longer load up modules for you. This
responsibility has been relegated to external programs such as hotplug
or discover. If you don't use either you can specify which modules you
want loaded in /etc/modules. Hope that helps.
