apt-get update
- this would upgrade your database to the latest version

apt-get upgrade
- this would upgrade your packages to the most recent version

apt-get dist-upgrade
- this would be used to upgrade to a more recent distro, e.g. wood to
sarge

man apt-get
- manual pages for apt-get

I would not advise you to do what u are about to do, especially with a
package like gnome.
