It turns out that installing another kernel did the trick. Most
amazing, this.
(It could have something to do with the fact that one kernel uses the
ehci USB module and another uses uhci. Under the uhci kernel, the
wheel works, under the ehci, it doesn't. But it could also just be
magic.)
