ppp/diald networking dying under heavy IDE (or CPU?) load

Is there a known reason why heavy IDE load (or possibly heavy CPU
load in copying disk to disk) would cause network connections over
ppp and diald to die?

(This is with kernel 2.4.18 on woody.)

I know that burning CDs on my IDE CD-RW drive causes serial port
input overruns because of some kernel or IDE problems.

Does heavy disk use (on an IDE controller with DMA disabled) also
cause serial-port problems?

Thanks,
Daniel
