you can have autofs mount it when requested, like i does your
cd, etc.
here's my auto.misc line:
smartmedia  -fstype=vfat,sync,nodev,nosuid,gid=1016,umask=002,rw :/dev/sda1

this assumes your usb-storage module drops the actual device at
/dev/sda1, and that you'd want to call it
/var/autofs/misc/smartmedia.

it mounts it when i request that mount point, and it unmounts it
shortly after i leave it sitting idle.
