This reference mentions that you ought to specify FQDN but that it works
without.
That is no longer true.
If preferences has:
Package: *
Pin: origin schuldei.org
Pin-Priority: 999
Then apt-cache policy x-window-system shows:
debian:/# apt-cache policy x-window-system
x-window-system:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 4.3.0-7
Version Table:
4.3.0-7 0
500 file: sarge/main Packages
4.3.0-0pre1v3 0
500 /http://www.schuldei.org ./ Packages
4.1.0-16woody3 0
500 http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main Packages
So the 4.3.0-7 version gets installed and 4.3.0-0pre1v3 ignored.
If preferences has:
Package: *
Pin: origin www.schuldei.org
Pin-Priority: 999
Then apt-cache policy x-window-system shows:
debian:/# apt-cache policy x-window-system
x-window-system:

4.1.0-16woody3 0
500 http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main Packages
So 4.3.0-0pre1v3 gets installed.
This used to work without the "www", but no longer.
