Found a way out myself; but somewhat difficult:
apt-get remove --purge libxaw7-dev
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get -f install
apt-get -f install (yes, twice !)
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install xlibmesa-gl-dev
And now I'm back at
# apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Calculating Upgrade... Done
