Re: Fwd: Problems with X, Dell Desktop 260GX, graphic card Intel 82845G

Hi everyone,

I have a problem with X. My desktop is a Dell GX260
with a graphics card Intel i82845G.
Apparently Xfree has just ricently added support for
such card, in xfree version 4.3.X. Accordingly, I am
using unstable woody since the stable trunk reaches just to 4.1. Apart
from using the most updated xserver available, it is
required to compile and install some kernel modules
an x drivers provided by Intel itself (at least that
is what they say) plus run the kernel version 2.4.10
or higher (currently 2.4.18 in my box). Ive done that
too.
Unfortunatelly, after swiching to unstable and
installing the Intel drivers, X does not work. On
the
console appears the following:

===========================

(II) Loading
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a
(II) Module bitmap: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
	compiled for 4.3.0.1, module version = 1.0.0
	Module class: XFree86 Font Renderer
ABI class: XFree86 Font Renderer, version 0.4

The "errors" you report are just informational (II) rather than actually being an error. I suspect your problem is elsewhere.

I've got a Dell GX270, and it took me a while to get a decent X system. I was able to get it going with the VESA driver, at low color depth and/or resolution (800x600x8-bit or something; I no longer remember the details).

The problem turned out to be that the Dell's BIOS, version A03, was apparently misreporting the amount of memory used by the integrated video; even though it was set in the BIOS to 8MB, the system was only told about 1MB. A downgrade of the BIOS to version A01 fixed the problem.

Since then I've heard of this problem biting others as well; the last person I corresponded with said that he has the same computer, but apparently it's a rev newer, and won't take the BIOS downgrade, after trying several times. He said he had called Dell, and they had told him that the machine won't take a BIOS downgrade.

I've written to Dell to ask them to fix their BIOS or to gain a reputation for shoddy hardware, but it apparently did absolutely no good, so now I've resorted to bad-mouthing Dell in posts like this one ;-)

Of course, this may have absolutely nothing to do with your problem.
