make and modversions.h

Hi all. I'm new to Debian and I have a problem:
modversions.h doesn't exist. I know this has been
mentioned before, but those threads didn't help me. I
need to install the nForce drivers to use my
motherboard's (an Abit NF7-S) built-in ethernet. When
I use make, the modversions.h not found error is
returned. I have looked around for answers, which
have said things like "install the kernel headers"
(done, no effect) and "install the kernel source and
sym-link to it" (done, no effect) and "cp
/boot/config-2.4.18-bf2.4 .config followed by make
oldconfig and make dep" (both make oldconfig and make
dep return 'no such target' errors, I think this must
be a really newbish mistake). The self installer for
the nVidia drivers for my graphics card corroborates
the improperly configured headers explanation by
returning an error to that effect. Right now, startx
ends with "no screens found" and "server closed by
peer" so I'm assuming I need to install those video
card drivers.
What this all boild down to is, 'how do I properly
configure my kernel headers?'
I'm using kernel 2.4.18, installed from 7 iso images
of 3.0 r2 binaries and one labelled update. Following
the advice of a friend, I installed nothing with
taskel or dselect on install and used apt-get as I
needed packages. So far I have apt-got
x-window-systemcore, kernel-headers-2.4.18-bf2.4, the
kernel source and the nVidia kernel stuff. To write
and email this I have booted back into Windows (by
changing the boot order of my hard drives in the
motherboard BIOS).
Thanks in advance,
Daniel
