When you say it doesn't get added, what do you mean?  Does it not try?
Or does it try and fail?  What does a log of the boot process tell you?

Are you using OSS or ALSA?  If you don't know what that means, then
a log of the boot process should tell us.

What do you mean by "modprobe doesn't seem to help"?  What happens
when you try to "modprobe esssolo1"?

What does lspci say?  And lsmod?
