For gnome you have capplets, which features the gnome-display-properties
that does exactly what you want and very easily.
(it is an GUI for randr)
apt-get install capplets capplets-data
then go to the desktop properties menu -> screen resolution
But as I found xrandr does not allow change the resolution to higher than
highest typed into /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 in SubSection "Display"; Modes.
Is there possibility to set virtual screen 1600x1280, but max resolution
1024x768 with possibility to use randr to change to 800x600 (to watch film
on TV)?
TIA, misiek
