Maybe the default color changed? Try these two things:
1.) Add the following xterm-equivalents (im using aterm) to your
~/.Xdefaults file:
$ grep ground .Xdefaults
Aterm*background: black
Aterm*foreground: white
2.) Make X read you ~/.Xdefaults file:
$ grep defaults .xsession
xrdb -load ~/.Xdefaults
