This is the console interface to the operating system.  All the
graphical stuff runs in the "X console" which you can't use until you
get the X server working.  To do any administration of your system
you'll need "console skills", i.e. knowledge of using shell commands
and a text editor (the most common ones are vi and emacs; many users
are religious devotees of one of these two systems; there are on-line
"holy wars" but no bloodshed yet).

is a reasonable on-line tutorial.  Another good idea would be to get a
book on introductry Unix/Linux skills (university libraries usually
have several of these; some public libraries do too).
