My understanding of this is, mutt does it right.  Not only that, it
bends over backwards to do it right in the best way possible for all
concerned.  For broken receiving MUA's, however, nothing can be done
on mutt's end to fix their broken behaviour.

The only solutions to this conundrum are:

   - tell your friends to get a decent mail client (Chyaa, right).

   - a procmail hack; use formail to re-write the header.

Nor do some of them appear to even bother to try (think Redmond, WA).

Consider this a premonition of what's going to happen when .NET
becomes ubiquitous.
