no mouse with kernel 2.6.x

Hello

as many i have the problem that the migration to kernel 2.6 didn't went
well because of the lack of the support of the mouse....

i went throug the archives and could get most of my machines working by
loading the psmouse module or using directly the /dev/input/mouse0 node
instead if /dev/psaux...

remains one machine where this doesn't work....
first thing i noted:
there was no /dev/input hierarchy anyway....
i tryed to copy it over from another machine, but this didn't yield
anything...

i directed gpm on the mouse0 link without a sccess...
i tryed a cat from the thing, and indeed there's nothing coming....

i tryed to look up if there were some interesting messages, but i can
only state, that the system found the thing, but not where it was
mounted to... :(

here extracts from dmesg:

devfs: v1.22 (20021013) Richard Gooch (rgooch@atnf.csiro.au)
devfs: boot_options: 0x0
input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard on isa0060/serio0
input: ImExPS/2 Generic Explorer Mouse on isa0060/serio1
mice: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice
atkbd.c: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0x7a on isa0060/serio0).
atkbd.c: This is an XFree86 bug. It shouldn't access hardware directly.

from /proc/bus/input/devices:

I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0001 Product=0001 Version=ab41
N: Name="AT Translated Set 2 keyboard"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio0/input0
H: Handlers=kbd event0
B: EV=120003
B: KEY=4 2000000 3802078 f840d001 f2ffffdf ffefffff ffffffff fffffffe
B: LED=7

I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=0006 Version=0000
N: Name="ImExPS/2 Generic Explorer Mouse"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio1/input0
H: Handlers=event1 mouse0 ts0
B: EV=7
B: KEY=1f0000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
B: REL=103

so it seems its bound to mouse0.... but it doesn't work?
what's going wrong?

i am running on
Linux kalman 2.6.3-1-k7 #2 Tue Feb 24 20:39:50 EST 2004 i686 GNU/Linux
with debian unstable...
please reply by CC since i am not on the list
