Serial ATA speed : kernel 2.4.25

Im trying to find some definitive information on configuring serial ATA drives.

Im using a 2.4.25 kernel with woody.
The mobo is an Intel 865PERC with an IHC5 controller and the drives are a pair of Maxtor 7Y250M0.

The system recognizes the drives but the logs seem to indicate its treating them as UDMA-33

excerpt from dmesg :

-----

hde: attached ide-disk driver.
hde: host protected area => 1
hde: 490234752 sectors (251000 MB) w/7936KiB Cache, CHS=30515/255/63, UDMA(33)
hdg: attached ide-disk driver.
hdg: host protected area => 1
hdg: 490234752 sectors (251000 MB) w/7936KiB Cache, CHS=30515/255/63, UDMA(33)

hdparm seems to confirm this giving an average of about 40 MB / sec for buffered disk reads.

I've read a lot of different material about using serial ATA and heard mention of support for the IHC5 but found nothing particular for this hardware.

any ideas or advice ?
even 'you should be asking this elsewhere e.g. ....'

thanks,

Martin
