install the alsa-base package.  On configuration, it should prompt you
to select the module(s) to load from a list of available modules.
Select the snd_intel8x0 module.  That should take care of it.

Also make sure you have alsa-utils, and then run alsamixer to unmute and
set the levels for your mixer channels.
