Are they also unmuted?  If there's little "MM"'s at the top of the
volume channels in alsamixer, the mute switch is turned on for those
channels.  By default ALSA installs with almost everything muted; so
if you never explcitly unmuted the channels (which is not the same as
turning the volume up), then they're probably still muted.  In a GUI
ALSA mixer such as gnome-alsamixer, you'll actually see little buttons
or checkboxes that say "Mute" that you can toggle.
