Squid not performing ident lookups (Deb3 r2 2.4 kernel)

Hi all,

Up until recently I've been running Squid on Red Hat or Fedora.  I've
always successfully used ident lookups with Squid to log users via ident
clients running on the Windows LAN machines.

I've now tried out Squid under Debian and cannot get it to log ident
responses even with the same conf files as I was using under RH/Fedora. 
To double check, I installed DansGuardian from unstable which can also do
ident lookups.  Again, this program also could not obtain ident responses
to log even though the same config on RH/Fedora worked fine.

Am I missing something obvious here?  I really need ident to work for my
current situation.
