Re: Turn Debian into a Desktop-System what to do

I assume you desktop system is not powered on 24 h per day.

So you possibly want to install anacron and logrotate.

anacron will make sure that a daily job is run daily --- even if you power
up only for an hour a day.

logrotate will backup and compress your logfiles and remove the old ones,

ls -l /var/log/syslog*
-rw-r----- 1 root adm 13780 Feb 1 14:42 /var/log/syslog
-rw-r----- 1 root adm 181982 Feb 1 11:42 /var/log/syslog.0
-rw-r----- 1 root adm 23203 Jan 31 10:55 /var/log/syslog.1.gz
-rw-r----- 1 root adm 11702 Jan 30 09:00 /var/log/syslog.2.gz
-rw-r----- 1 root adm 17344 Jan 29 08:02 /var/log/syslog.3.gz
-rw-r----- 1 root adm 23581 Jan 28 08:17 /var/log/syslog.4.gz
-rw-r----- 1 root adm 41200 Jan 27 08:11 /var/log/syslog.5.gz
-rw-r----- 1 root adm 20995 Jan 26 08:16 /var/log/syslog.6.gz

Thats what I have, and
du -sk /var/log/
11381 /var/log
11 MB is ok.

I have hot needed to manually change the configuration for logrotate or
