Do I have to do anything else in shell?
Is this a "real" external modem, or is it a USB "win-"modem? (Just
because it's USB does not mean it's a win-modem, but there's a high
chance of it.)
Are you doing this as root or as a normal user? If a normal user, you
might need to add your user to the "dialout" and/or "dip" group. (I
always forget which one is necessary - you'd think "dialout", but then,
why can't I remember that if that's the case? Maybe I'm just senile.)
At the command prompt, does "echo ATDT555-1234 > /dev/ttyS1" (replace
the number with your cell phone #, or another number you can hear
ringing, and replace the "/dev/ttyS1" with the appropriate device name)
cause that phone dialed to ring? ("echo ATZ > /dev/ttyS1" should quit.)
