Re: Installing mplayer 1.0pre3 from source

Dear friends:

I am a newbie but I thought I should try to install mplayer from source.
So I downloaded the tarball source for mplayer 1.0pre3 and, using
gcc3.33 compiler on Xandros 2.0 (Debian), I compiled it. It looks fine
but nothing happens when I try to launch it. Here are the results when I
do that:

That's normal, mplayer is a console application ie- "mplayer /home/user/song.wav"

Does this mean that the installation was a success?
yes

II. MPLAYER CODECS:

Where do I install the skins, please?

I don't remember exactly where, but there is a readme file in the mplayer sources, plus their site has howto's and FAQ's.

If you're trying to get the graphical player, then type gmplayer, not mplayer. This assumes you compiled mplayer correctly, ie "./configure --enable-gui".

In short, the README file in the top level folder of the sources is an invaluable source of information.

Hope this helps,
