I have tried to compile and insert the ALSA modules. when I issue the command insmod snd-es1371 I receive the following: Using /lib/modules/2.4.20snd1/alsa/snd-ens1371.o /lib/modules/2.4.20snd1/alsa/snd-ens1371.o: /lib/modules/2.4.20snd1/alsa/snd-ens1371.o: unresolved symbol snd_pcm_new

I had similar problems with trying to compile my own ALSA module (an AC'97 integrated chip) and a custom kernel; I finally gave up on the custom kernel and installed a stock kernel and the matching stock ALSA modules, which solved my problem.I've built a custom 2.4.20 kernel package.
Sorry, it's not what you wanted to hear, but it's what worked for me. I'm sure it can be done; I just couldn't do it.
