I have tried to compile and insert the ALSA modules. when I issue the
command

insmod snd-es1371

I receive the following:

Using /lib/modules/2.4.20snd1/alsa/snd-ens1371.o
/lib/modules/2.4.20snd1/alsa/snd-ens1371.o:
/lib/modules/2.4.20snd1/alsa/snd-ens1371.o: unresolved symbol
snd_pcm_new

I've built a custom 2.4.20 kernel package.

I had similar problems with trying to compile my own ALSA module (an AC'97 integrated chip) and a custom kernel; I finally gave up on the custom kernel and installed a stock kernel and the matching stock ALSA modules, which solved my problem.

Sorry, it's not what you wanted to hear, but it's what worked for me. I'm sure it can be done; I just couldn't do it.
