I am interested in the replies to this, because I have just ordered an ATI9200 
board to replace an aging nvidia based card because I was fed up with the 
lack of opensource drivers for it.

My understanding had been that with Xfree v 4.x release  the only kernel level 
support that was needed with the "dri" interface, and that the video card 
drivers then came within the xfree-xserver package.  If not, there appears to 
be  a web site (http://dri.sf.net) where they can be got from (as modules to 
xfree).

You seem to be contemplating a different approach - so I am now confused with 
what I thought I was going to have to do when my card arrived
